Kolkata, Dec 31 (The Street Press India) – Hundreds of truck and commercial vehicle drivers gathered near Dankuni toll plaza in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday, blocking national highway number 2 for about two hours. They were protesting against new laws for hit-and-run cases.
Around 10:30 am at Chanditala, the protest intensified as drivers blocked the road by burning tires and parking their vehicles in the middle, as reported by the police.
The police successfully cleared the road blockade, and vehicle movement resumed at 12:50 pm, according to an officer.
One of the protesting truck drivers mentioned, “We’ve been told the new laws impose a 10-year jail term and a Rs 7 lakh fine for hit-and-run cases.”
